Virginia Just Banned Your AR. Three Groups Are Suing to Get It Back.

SAF, NRA & FPC hit Richmond with a federal lawsuit on May 16—and Bruen makes their case almost unbeatable.

The Second Amendment Foundation, National Rifle Association, and Firearms Policy Coalition filed a federal lawsuit on May 16 challenging Virginia's newly enacted bans on semiautomatic rifles and standard-capacity magazines.

Three organizations. One lawsuit. Zero intention of losing.

Virginia's Democrat-controlled legislature passed what the gun-control lobby brands an 'assault weapon ban'—a deliberately slippery label engineered to criminalize the most commonly owned rifles in America. Standard-capacity magazines used daily by millions of law-abiding gun owners for home defense and sport shooting are now banned under state law.

**That's not a safety policy. That's confiscation with a press release stapled to it.**

Here's why Richmond is in serious trouble: the *Bruen* standard is a buzzsaw. Under the Supreme Court's 2022 ruling, if the government cannot point to a genuine historical tradition of analogous firearms regulation dating back to the Founding era, the law dies in court. Virginia cannot make that case. No such tradition exists for banning the most widely owned rifle platform in the country—full stop.

Now look at who's on the other side of this lawsuit.

SAF founder Alan Gottlieb helped deliver *McDonald v. Chicago*—the landmark ruling that incorporated the Second Amendment against state governments. The NRA-ILA brings decades of litigation muscle and institutional resources. FPC brings a relentlessly precedent-focused legal strategy that has already notched wins in federal courts across the country. Richmond isn't facing one formidable opponent. It's facing all three at once.

**This is what fighting back looks like.**

When anti-gun legislatures ram through bans on constitutionally protected arms, the answer isn't to wait and see—it's to file, fight, and force them to defend the indefensible before a federal judge.

Virginia thought it could get away with this. SAF, NRA, and FPC just made that a very expensive assumption.

Watch this case. When the district court rules—and when this inevitably climbs toward an appellate decision—it won't just affect Virginia gun owners. It will send a message to every state legislature eyeing a similar ban: *try it and we'll see you in court.*
