DOJ Becomes Blue States' Gun-Ban Repo Man
Feds cut a deal: withhold confiscated trigger switches from owners in MD, IL, MN, DC & RI—no federal law required, just five Democrat AGs demanding it.
The federal government is now the enforcement arm of blue-state gun bans. Congress never voted on it. A federal court never ordered it. It happened because five Democrat AGs filed a lawsuit—and DOJ folded.
Here's the deal struck Thursday: the feds will refuse to return lawfully seized trigger switches to their owners if those owners happen to live in Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, the District of Columbia, or Rhode Island—states where the devices are banned under state law. In exchange, those same AGs dropped their lawsuit. Case closed. Property gone.
**Let that sentence sit for a second.** The federal government is withholding private property from American citizens based not on a federal conviction, not on a federal statute, but on the zip code where the owner sleeps.
These trigger switches—including forced-reset triggers and similar rapid-fire devices—exist in genuinely murky federal legal territory. The ATF has reversed its own classification on them more than once. That ambiguity didn't matter to the AGs. They couldn't kill the devices in federal court, so they engineered a deal to make sure owners never recover them at all. DOJ handed them that win without a fight.
The Fifth Amendment has no carve-out for Maryland. Due process doesn't dissolve at the Illinois state line. But here we are.
Now ask yourself what stops the next blue-state AG from filing the identical lawsuit over standard-capacity magazines. Or suppressors. Or any other component a single state legislature decides it dislikes this session. The template is live. The DOJ just proved it works.
**This is not the federal government enforcing federal law.** This is the federal government operating as a property-seizure contractor for anti-gun state governments—and doing it for free, on your dime.
Notice who's celebrating: the same Bloomberg-aligned state AGs who have spent years trying to litigate the Second Amendment into irrelevance. They lost in court. So they sued to block the return window instead. And they got everything they wanted.
Gun owners in those five jurisdictions are the immediate casualties. But every gun owner in America just watched the federal government volunteer to enforce state-level gun bans as a matter of executive policy—no vote, no debate, no floor fight.
**What needs to happen now:** Contact your U.S. Representative and both Senators. Demand they scrutinize this DOJ arrangement and pass legislation barring the federal government from withholding legally seized property on the basis of state-level restrictions alone. If you're in Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, DC, or Rhode Island, document your situation and link up with your state gun-rights organizations immediately—legal challenges to this deal are the logical and necessary next move.
Watch this space. If DOJ just became the repo arm for five blue-state gun bans, the question isn't whether this expands. It's which device—and which state—is next.
