Connecticut Just Banned a Pistol — And They're Not Done Yet

Hartford Democrats passed a sweeping gun bill that targets a semi-auto pistol capable of conversion. Your mag, your brace, your carry gun — who's next?

Anti-gun legislators use each new ban as a legal and political blueprint — what passes in Connecticut TODAY gets introduced in YOUR state TOMORROW. This is how they boil the frog.
  • If you own any pistol with aftermarket parts or high-capacity configurations, document your compliance NOW — these laws move fast and grandfather clauses are never as protective as they sound.
  • Watch for this bill's language to resurface in Virginia under Spanberger, or in any swing state with a newly flipped legislature — the copy-paste gun ban strategy is in full effect.

The Connecticut House passed a gun control package on April 22 that includes an outright ban on a pistol that can allegedly be converted to fire over 1,000 rounds per minute in fully automatic mode. Sounds extreme — until you realize how these bans work: lawmakers pick ONE scary-sounding gun, ban it, call it a win, and then come back for yours next session.

Here's what they're NOT telling you: fully automatic weapons have been federally regulated since 1986. Converting any firearm to full-auto without proper NFA licensing is already a federal felony. This ban doesn't stop criminals — criminals don't file paperwork. What it DOES do is give Connecticut's anti-gun machine a fresh template to expand restrictions to any semi-automatic pistol they decide looks too dangerous.

Governor-in-waiting Democrats in Hartford have been on a legislative tear for years, and this bill is their latest trophy. The same playbook has been run by Newsom in California, Hochul in New York, Pritzker in Illinois, and Murphy in New Jersey — ban the fringe case, normalize the mechanism, then widen the net. Connecticut gun owners have watched their rights get carved up piece by piece, and this bill is another slice.

The silver lining? Legal challenges are already being primed across the country against exactly these kinds of sweeping bans, and with Justices Thomas and Alito holding the line on Bruen's text-and-history standard, overreach like this is increasingly vulnerable in federal court. But that fight takes time — and in the meantime, Connecticut gun owners are living under laws that treat them like criminals for owning legal firearms.

Don't think this stays in Hartford. Every ban that passes in a blue state gets photocopied and dropped into a dozen other legislatures within months. If you own a pistol with any kind of aftermarket configuration, you need to know what your state's attorney general is watching.
