California Just Gave CCW Holders a Third Year — Starting January 1, 2027, Not on the Card You Hold Now

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, September 12: Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1948 on June 30. On January 1, 2027, newly issued and renewed standard CCW licenses generally run three years instead of two. Current cards keep the printed two-year date. Sheriff William Honsal: do not wait for an automatic extension.

A two-year card is a renewal trap. A three-year card is less of one. It is not shall-issue, and it is not national reciprocity. It is one less trip to the sheriff for people who already survived the process.
  • HCSO posted Sept. 12, 2026: AB 1948 signed June 30, 2026, by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Effective Jan. 1, 2027.
  • New and renewed standard CCW licenses generally valid three years from issuance. Old two-year cards are not auto-extended.
  • Sheriff William Honsal: follow the date on the current license; renew as required.
  • PC 26150 requirements remain: age 21, identity, residency, training, recorded ownership, not disqualified.
  • Statewide statute. Humboldt is the issuing sheriff explaining it. Not a court order.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office posted the notice September 12, 2026. “On June 30, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1948 (AB 1948), which makes several administrative changes to California’s concealed carry licensing process. One of the most significant changes for CCW license holders is the extension of the standard license period from two years to three years. The change becomes effective January 1, 2027.” Beginning that date, “newly issued and renewed standard California CCW licenses will generally be valid for three years from the date of issuance.”

“Current CCW license holders do not need to take any immediate action. Licenses issued before January 1, 2027, will remain valid until the 2-year expiration date printed on the license and will not automatically be extended. Once an existing license is renewed on or after January 1, 2027, the renewed license will be issued under the new three-year term.” Sheriff William Honsal: “This change will reduce the frequency of renewals for thousands of CCW holders across California while also reducing some of the administrative workload associated with processing renewals. It is important for our current permit holders to understand that their existing permits are not automatically extended. They should continue to follow the expiration date on their current license and renew it as required.”

The sheriff’s office states the change “does not eliminate California’s existing application, background investigation, training, eligibility, or other statutory requirements.” It recites Penal Code § 26150: not a disqualified person; at least 21 with proof of identity; Humboldt resident for a Humboldt card; training under § 26165; recorded owner of the listed firearms. CCW Unit: (707) 268-3619. This is a term-of-years fix, not Bruen compliance. The live-fire class, the psych paperwork, and the waiting room are still the price of the plastic. The plastic just lasts a year longer — after you renew in 2027.

"Three years starts with the next card, not the one already in the wallet."
