Your Church Lobbies to Disarm You—Then Hires Armed Guards

United Methodist. Presbyterian Church USA. Episcopal. United Church of Christ. American Baptist Churches USA. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. And the Union of Reformed Judaism. All seven hold official positions demanding stricter gun laws for you.

All of them deploy armed security to protect their leadership and their property.

Read that again.

**This isn't accidental hypocrisy. This is a class distinction.** Armed protection for the institution. Disarmament advocacy for the congregation. The national hierarchy sends lobbyists to Capitol Hill while a guy with a Glock stands in the vestibule—and most people in those pews have no idea either one is happening.

Not every denomination sold out. The Southern Baptist Convention—America's largest Protestant denomination—has killed every gun control resolution brought to its floor. The Presbyterian Church in America and the independent Churches of Christ either stay out of the fight or lean toward individual rights.

And then there's West Freeway Church of Christ. In December 2019, a gunman opened fire mid-service. Jack Wilson ended the threat in six seconds. At least seven other armed congregants already had their guns drawn.

**That's what a self-defense theology looks like in practice.**

The Bible doesn't speak with one voice here, and anyone who tells you it does is making a political argument, not a spiritual one. Isaiah beats swords into plowshares. Luke 22:36 has Jesus telling his disciples to sell their cloaks and buy swords if they have to. As Jeff Knox at Ammoland points out, churches that land exclusively on pacifism and then weaponize it as legislation aren't offering a higher moral path—they're laundering gun control politics through a stained-glass window.

And the politics don't even work. Gun control laws don't reduce criminal violence. They disarm law-abiding people and leave predators alone. The denominations lobbying hardest for these laws know this, or should. It doesn't slow them down.

Gun owners sitting in those pews need to get uncomfortable—and stay there. Ask your pastor where the local church stands. Ask whether your congregation is pushing back on the national body's position. Find out whether the building you worship in has armed security while the hierarchy in Washington lobbies to make sure you can't carry in it.
