Wyoming Just Left Armed Self-Defenders to Rot
HB14 is dead — and now even justified shooters in the reddest state in America face six-figure legal bills for winning.
The legislature killed HB14, a bill that would have forced the state to cover attorney's fees and court costs when a law-abiding citizen successfully defends themselves with a firearm. The math is savage: you stop a violent criminal, a politically ambitious DA decides to make an example of you anyway, and Wyoming just greenlit that play — even after you win in court.
You don't have to lose the case. You just have to go to court. That's the whole game.
**This is the weapon the gun-control lobby never talks about out loud.** The criminal justice system doesn't need a conviction to destroy a middle-class gun owner. A two-year legal fight at $400–$600 an hour does the job just fine. Acquittal comes with a receipt, and that receipt can run six figures before you ever see a jury.
HB14 was the fix. Simple, fair, surgical: if a justified defender prevails, the state eats the legal costs — not the guy who did everything right. Wyoming still couldn't pass it.
Self-defense insurance and legal defense funds exist for exactly this reason. They are real, they matter, and if you carry without one you are gambling with your family's financial future. But they are a patch, not a cure. What HB14 proposed was systemic — closing the loophole prosecutors use to punish people for surviving.
**Wyoming just chose to leave that loophole wide open.**
Here's the national lesson, and it's a cold one: a pro-gun majority in a state legislature is not the same thing as pro-gun *will* in a state legislature. Something dies between the campaign trail and the committee room. The urgency evaporates. Bills get buried in procedural limbo, gutted into meaninglessness, or simply allowed to expire — and gun owners get told to try again next session. Again. And again.
If Wyoming won't protect its armed citizens from legal persecution after a righteous defensive shoot, do not assume your state will. Not Texas. Not Florida. Not yours. The map looks red on election night and pink in the committee hearing.
**What you do right now:** Get self-defense legal insurance if you carry — today, before you need it. Then pull up your state legislature's bill tracker and find out if a similar measure is alive or dead in your state. If it's alive, call your rep. If it's dead, ask why. Anti-gun prosecutors are counting on the courts being expensive and gun owners being unprepared.
Don't give them that. And watch Wyoming's next session — because this fight isn't over, and neither is ours.
