Washington Just Posted the Price of Permission: $126, Before Training

Bearing Arms reported on September 15, 2026, that Washington had posted what a Permit to Purchase will cost. The official site is getapermitwa.org, branded with the Washington State Patrol seal. The application portal itself is “coming soon.” The fee table is live. A new permit is $126.00: $90.00 for the application and $36.00 for fingerprint processing. The site warns that the local agency taking prints “may charge a nominal fee” on top of that. Renewal before expiration is $90. Late, up to 90 days after expiration, adds $25. An expired permit over 90 days is back to $126. FAQ 8: the application fee is not refundable for denials.

The legal hook is RCW 9.41.121. Starting May 1, 2027, a permit is required to purchase or transfer a firearm in Washington. The card is valid for five years and covers an unlimited number of firearms — it does not replace the dealer NICS check at the counter. WSP must issue or deny within 30 days of a completed application, or 60 days if the applicant lacks a valid Washington license or has not been a resident for the prior 90 days. Applicants still have to complete a WSP-certified firearms safety course under RCW 9.41.1132, including live fire. The course list is “coming soon.” The site does not list a course price. After May 1, 2027, WSP-certified training is also required for new concealed pistol licenses and for CPL renewals. Prior training that is not WSP-certified will not count.

Bearing Arms quoted Gov. Bob Ferguson from the 2025 signing of House Bill 1163: “Gun violence in Washington state breaks apart too many families and kills too many children.” The statute is the price list. Peace officers and other listed professionals can skip the class. They still pay and still get fingerprinted if they want an off-duty gun through a dealer.
