They Want Your Gun Records. April 28 Is the Day.

A House hearing could crack open the only firewall blocking a federal firearms registry—and gun owners have days, not weeks, to stop it.

The Tiahrt Amendment has done three things since 2003: blocked ATF from sharing firearms trace data with outside agencies or the public; barred ATF from forcing federally licensed dealers into physical inventory audits; and required that approved NICS background check records be destroyed within 24 hours.

Three provisions. Twenty-plus years of holding the line. All of it now under a congressional microscope.

The House Oversight Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement has scheduled a formal hearing to examine those exact protections. The committee leans Republican. That's the only reason this isn't already a repeal celebration.

**But "Republican-led" is not the same as "safe."**

Rep. Madeleine Dean reintroduced the Gun Records Restoration and Preservation Act in June 2025—a bill engineered to strip every one of those Tiahrt protections. A hearing environment like this is precisely where legislation like hers gets oxygen, gets framing, gets momentum. Even in a friendly room, the side that controls the narrative wins the long game.

Here is what the gun-control lobby's pitch actually means in plain English: they call Tiahrt a loophole that "shields illegal trafficking." What they want is permanent, searchable federal records of every gun purchase—accessible to prosecutors, plaintiffs' attorneys, and eventually anyone with a FOIA request and an agenda. They'll call it crime-fighting. It's a registry with better PR.

**Don't let them launder that agenda through softer language.**

The window to make noise is not after the hearing. It's not the morning of. It's right now—today—when congressional offices are counting calls, logging constituent contacts, and deciding whether defending Tiahrt is worth the political capital.

Call your House representative. Email the office. Show up in the constituent contact form and don't be polite about the stakes. Demand a public, on-the-record defense of the Tiahrt Amendment before April 28.

Six days. The anti-gun lobby has been working this angle for twenty years. They know those three provisions by heart. The only question is whether gun owners show up loud enough to remind Republicans exactly who sent them to Washington.

**Watch this hearing. Then watch what every member says—or doesn't say—on the record.** That silence will tell you everything you need to know about the next fight.
