Talarico Hired 'C*cks Not Glocks' Leader to Write His Gun Bills

His first hire. His first session. Three gun-control bills filed on the same day.

When Talarico walked into the Texas House as a freshman in 2019, he brought Ana Lucia Lopez along as his legislative aide. Lopez wasn't a random policy staffer — she was the heir to "C*cks Not Glocks," the campus-carry protest movement that flooded the University of Texas with sex toys to ridicule students exercising their legal right to carry.

On March 6, 2019 — early in his very first session — Lopez drafted or co-drafted three gun-control bills all filed on the same day. House Bill 3506 would have gutted concealed carry reciprocity across state lines. House Bill 3507 would have buried shooting ranges under NICS background check mandates for firearm rentals. And House Bill 3508 — the one that should have ended his political career before it started — would have converted Texas from a shall-issue state into a may-issue state, handing unelected bureaucrats the power to deny law-abiding Texans their carry permits on a whim.

All three died without a single co-sponsor, a single hearing, or a single committee vote. Dead on arrival. But Talarico filed them anyway — and that is the point. Nobody forced his hand. Nobody made him hire Lopez. Nobody made him drop three anti-2A bills in his opening weeks. He chose every single one of those moves.

Now he's the Democratic nominee to take John Cornyn's U.S. Senate seat. Running statewide means the playbook writes itself: soften the tone, dodge the specifics, hope the base doesn't go looking.

Talarico's campaign has not disavowed the bills. He has not explained why he staffed his office with the face of the anti-campus-carry movement. He has not answered why his opening move in Austin was a push to gut shall-issue carry in a state that would go on to pass Constitutional Carry two years later.

This is what opposition watch looks like: a candidate with a carefully managed moderate image and a first-session record that screams something completely different. The gap between those two things is where Texas gun owners need to focus.
