The Supreme Court declined to hear a home-search challenge supported by gun-rights organizations. The October 5 order denied the petition in Quashaun Reel’s North Carolina challenge, docket 25-1099, leaving the case without Supreme Court review.

Bearing Arms reported October 7 that the dispute concerned police access to the area surrounding a home during a knock-and-talk investigation. Gun Owners of America, Gun Owners of California and the Tennessee Firearms Association supported an amicus brief urging the justices to take the case.

The organizations argued that police had stretched the ordinary permission to approach a front door beyond its limits. The case arose from a North Carolina narcotics investigation, rather than a challenge to a firearm restriction. Its relevance to gun owners is the protection of the home against investigative intrusions.

The order records a denial of review. It does not supply a new Supreme Court explanation resolving the underlying search question. Keep that distinction in view when following coverage of the case. Sign up for the WTF News newsletter.
