SCOTUS or Bust: SAF & FPC Force Showdown on Maryland's Carry Trap
Maryland's 'sensitive places' map is so dense a legal carry permit can't survive a trip to the grocery store — now the Supreme Court has to answer for it.
That's not compliance with *Bruen*. That's a middle finger in legal cursive.
The Second Amendment Foundation and Firearms Policy Coalition have had enough. They've petitioned the Supreme Court to rip the mask off Maryland's post-*Bruen* "sensitive places" scheme — a prohibited-zone patchwork so sweeping that a law-abiding citizen with a valid permit can barely step outside without committing a crime.
**This is what defiance looks like when states are too smart to just say no.**
The 2022 *Bruen* ruling was supposed to settle it: the right to bear arms extends outside the home, and states can't bury it in paperwork or bureaucratic obstruction. Maryland heard that ruling and responded by drawing a map. A very, very detailed map.
SAF and FPC's petition forces the justices to answer the question lower courts have been ducking: how many square inches of public space can a state carve into a "sensitive" no-carry zone before the carry right itself disappears?
Because right now the answer is apparently: *all of them.*
The stakes here don't stop at the Maryland state line. New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois have been running the exact same play — flooding the zone with sensitive-place designations to strangle carry permits in the crib. A cert grant from SCOTUS doesn't just put Maryland on trial. It puts every one of those states in the crosshairs simultaneously.
**One ruling. Every carry-ban state. All at once.**
Anti-gun legislatures have been betting that the justices will keep blinking — that *Bruen* was a bright line on paper that fades to gray in practice. SAF and FPC are forcing that bet to the table.
If SCOTUS grants cert, blue-state attorneys general from Annapolis to Sacramento start sweating. If it doesn't, the sensitive-places loophole becomes permanent infrastructure — and the right to carry in America becomes a regional privilege that exists only where politicians choose to tolerate it.
Watch this docket like your carry rights depend on it.
**Because they do.**
