Matador Arms Espada: The 9mm Bullpup PCC You're Overlooking

The Matador Arms Espada is one of the most underrated 9mm rifles on the market, and RECOIL's full review confirms it demands a hard look from any gun owner who wants maximum barrel in minimum footprint.

Bullpup designs move the action behind the trigger group, putting a full-length barrel in a package shorter than most AR pistols — without the legal burden of an SBR. The Espada runs 9mm, feeds from common pistol magazines, and wraps everything in a chassis that looks like it came off a science-fiction set.

RECOIL reviewer Steven Kuo put the Espada through its paces and came away impressed. The platform checks every box a serious PCC buyer should care about: reliability, solid ergonomics, and a trigger that doesn't feel like dragging a wet rope through a knothole — the persistent sin of the bullpup format.

This matters right now. Gun-grabbers in a dozen state legislatures are targeting PCCs with arbitrary "assault weapon" ban language, and every law-abiding American who wants one should buy before that window closes. A legal, reliable, well-engineered option like the Espada is precisely what they want off the table.

Bullpup PCCs also make outstanding home-defense tools — easier to maneuver through hallways than a standard rifle-length platform, more capable than a handgun, and available in California-compliant configurations that still leave the gun genuinely useful. That's more than most featureless builds can claim.

The Espada is not American-made — Matador Arms is a Taiwanese manufacturer — so factor that into your buying decision. It is legally imported and sold through licensed dealers, and it represents exactly the kind of global free-market competition that keeps domestic manufacturers sharp.

Bottom line: If you've been sleeping on bullpup PCCs, wake up. Read the full RECOIL review at recoilweb.com, find a dealer who stocks the Espada, and put hands on it before your state's next legislative session makes the choice for you.
