Green Berets & SEALs Should Never Need a Permit to Carry

Rep. Harrigan's SOF Concealed Carry Act gives elite special operations veterans federal carry authority nationwide — no bureaucrat permission required

WTF News April 24, 2026 📖 2 min read

Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) — a Special Forces veteran himself — introduced the Special Operations Forces Concealed Carry Act, granting federal concealed carry authority to both active-duty and veteran special operations personnel whose firearms training and marksmanship standards already exceed anything a civilian permit process could demand.

Think about that for a second. The same Green Berets, SEALs, and Rangers trusted to operate behind enemy lines with weapons systems that would make most Americans' heads spin — those men and women come home and bureaucrats tell them they need a state permit to carry a pistol.

Harrigan isn't having it. His bill cuts through that nonsense by recognizing what everyone already knows: SOF personnel are the most trained, vetted, and disciplined firearms operators on the planet.

This isn't a new concept. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act already extends similar federal carry authority to active and retired law enforcement nationwide. Harrigan's bill applies that same common-sense logic to special operations forces — people who received more firearms training before breakfast than most cops get in a year.

Anti-gun state governments in California, New York, and Illinois have spent years building carry permit walls designed to keep law-abiding citizens disarmed. Those walls have no business applying to the warriors who bled to defend this country.

Harrigan knows the terrain firsthand. He served in the 7th Special Forces Group and ran for Congress specifically to fight for veterans and constitutional rights. This bill is exactly why voters sent him to Washington.

The legislation still needs to clear committee and pass both chambers — which means gun owners need to make noise now. Call your representative. Demand they co-sponsor and advance this bill. America's warriors earned every right the rest of us have, and then some.
