DOJ Just Became Anti-Gun States' Confiscation Arm
No court order. No federal statute. Just a backroom settlement letting Democrat AGs keep your seized property forever.
The federal government just handed Democrat-controlled states an enforcement weapon they never won at the ballot box or in a courtroom.
On Thursday, the DOJ signed a settlement with Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, the District of Columbia, and Rhode Island — agreeing it will **NOT** return confiscated forced-reset trigger (FRT) devices to their rightful owners if those owners live in states that ban the devices under state law.
Let that land. The feds seized your property. Now they refuse to give it back — not because federal law requires it, but because your governor hates guns.
These five Democrat AGs sued demanding the feds play confiscation proxy for their state bans. DOJ's response? Fold immediately. No fight. No pushback. A clean surrender that converts federal property-return logistics into a backdoor enforcement mechanism for laws that couldn't survive federal scrutiny on their own.
**No court ordered this. No statute authorizes it. This is bureaucratic horse-trading dressed up as logistics.**
The legal ground here matters. The Fifth Circuit ruled in 2024 that forced-reset triggers are *not* machine guns under federal law. Owners in free states may hold a legitimate legal claim to their returned property. Owners in blue states get nothing — by gentlemen's agreement between Biden-era DOJ lawyers and the most aggressively anti-gun AGs in the country.
Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, DC, and Rhode Island. The same jurisdictions that have spent years stacking ban upon ban on firearms accessories, magazines, and standard-capacity anything. Their AGs sued to make the feds their de facto confiscation agents.
It worked.
This is not federal law enforcement. **This is the DOJ acting as property manager for anti-gun governors.**
If you're in one of those five jurisdictions and the feds seized your FRT devices, you may have a Fifth Amendment takings argument sitting right in front of you. Don't wait. Consult a firearms attorney now. Geography alone does not equal guilt — and a backroom settlement does not equal a legal forfeiture.
Gun owners in free states: don't look away. Today it's trigger switches in blue states. Tomorrow, the precedent is locked in — and the template exists for the feds to honor *any* state-level ban when deciding what seized property comes back and to whom. Your state is one election away from being on that list.
This is the confiscation playbook without the confiscation headline. Watch it carefully.
**The move:** Call your U.S. Representative today and demand hearings on this settlement. The DOJ does not outsource property seizure to anti-gun state AGs without accountability — not without a fight. Find your rep at house.gov. Make the call. Make it loud.
