Federal hearing exposes illegal shadow database from the same agency that tried to turn brace owners into felons

Let that number sink in. One billion records. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives constructed a de facto national gun registry, hiding it behind bureaucratic language and paper-trail technicalities — in direct defiance of federal law.

Senators grilled ATF officials this week over the scope of the database, which is fed by out-of-business dealer records the agency must index by law — but not retain indefinitely in searchable form. Gun owners and Second Amendment advocates argue the ATF blew past that legal line years ago.

This is the same agency that tried to transform millions of law-abiding pistol-brace owners into felons overnight. The same agency that rewrote the definition of "engaged in the business" to ensnare private sellers. The same agency still tangled in federal courts over Biden-era rules on frames and receivers that judges have repeatedly struck down.

Acting AG Todd Blanche now oversees the Justice Department apparatus that houses the ATF. Gun owners need to demand loudly whether his DOJ will rein in this rogue bureau — or let it keep building its shadow registry one digitized 4473 at a time.

The Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 banned a centralized gun registry for a reason. Congress understood that a government holding a list of every gun and every owner is a government one bad election away from confiscation. The ATF understands that too — which is exactly why it kept building the database anyway.

This isn't paranoia. This is a Senate hearing. This is a billion records. This is the receipts.

Call your senators today and demand co-sponsorship of the Abolish ATF Act. If Congress won't eliminate the agency, it must at minimum mandate the immediate destruction of every illegally retained firearm record in that database.
