Arkansas Voters Face a Gun-Rights Amendment That Reaches Beyond Firearms

Issue 2 would expressly include ammunition, accessories and components in state constitutional protection.

Arkansas’s gun-rights ballot question reaches past the firearm itself. Ammunition, accessories and components are in the proposed protection too.

Bearing Arms reported October 5 that Issue 2 would revise Article 2, Section 5 of the state constitution. The existing language protects keeping and bearing arms for common defense. The proposal adds lawful hunting, recreation and other lawful purposes, and describes the right as natural, fundamental and individual.

Those words matter because restrictions can target the parts and supplies that make a firearm usable, even when the gun remains lawful. The proposed amendment would give those items explicit recognition in the state’s constitutional text.

This is a proposal going before voters, not a protection already enacted. Its practical reach would depend on adoption and subsequent interpretation. Read the official ballot text before casting a vote, and track implementation if it passes. Sign up for WTF News for firearms-policy coverage that separates proposed language from current law.
