A California Parolee Forced a Door in Eureka. The Resident Shot Him. The Sheriff Did Not Arrest the Resident.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office posted the release September 15, 2026. On September 14, at approximately 4:34 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in the 3900 block of Walnut Street in Eureka “reporting that he had shot a male subject who had forcibly entered his residence.” The resident said the suspect fled on foot toward Walnut Drive. Deputies responded with Eureka Police. A male matching the description was located in the area of W Street and Glatt Street with a gunshot wound. EMS already staged nearby took him to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Taren Joseph Ray Aubrey of Eureka. “Based on evidence recovered at the scene, along with statements provided by the victim and witnesses, deputies determined that Aubrey had forcibly entered the residence prior to being shot.” After hospital release he was booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on PC 459 burglary; PC 29800(a)(1) felon/addict in possession of a firearm; PC 602.5(b) unauthorized entry of an occupied dwelling; and PC 3000.08 violation of parole. “The victim was not injured during the incident.” “Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, deputies determined the victim acted out of fear for their life when Aubrey was shot.
