He'd owned his SIG P365 for eight months, put maybe four hundred rounds through it at the local indoor range, and could usually keep his groups somewhere on the silhouette target. But the first morning of a weekend defensive pistol course, standing fifteen feet from a cardboard IDPA target, he watched his shots drift low and left every single time an instructor was watching. The moment he thought no one was looking, they drifted right back toward center.

The instructor didn't say a word about his sights. She watched him shoot six rounds, then asked one question: "What's your finger doing the moment before the gun fires?"

Marcus had no idea. That was the point.

Trigger control is consistently identified by defensive shooting instructors as the single most common accuracy failure in new pistol shooters. Not sight alignment. Not stance. Not grip — though grip plays a supporting role. The trigger. Specifically, what the shooter's finger does in the last fraction of a second before the striker falls, and what it does immediately after.

Understanding why this matters requires a brief detour into physics. A modern compact pistol like the P365, a Glock 19, or a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield weighs somewhere between twenty and thirty ounces fully loaded. The bullet and powder charge together weigh less than half an ounce. For that tiny projectile to hit where the sights are pointing, the muzzle can't move at all during the fraction of a second between trigger break and bullet exit — and that window is measured in milliseconds. Any finger pressure that pushes, rolls, or yanks the frame sideways is already built into the shot's trajectory before you feel the recoil.

This is the essence of what instructors call trigger slap, and it's almost universal in new shooters.

Trigger slap happens when a shooter rushes the trigger press — either consciously trying to force the shot at the moment they think the sights look aligned, or unconsciously flinching in anticipation of the report and recoil. The result is a fast, grabbing motion: the finger snatches the trigger rearward rather than pressing it steadily. The frame rotates slightly before the shot breaks. The bullet goes where the muzzle was pointing at the moment of that rotation, not where the sights were indexed.

For right-handed shooters, this rotation tends to be down and left. For left-handed shooters, down and right. If you've ever had an instructor circle the bottom corner of a target and raise an eyebrow at you, now you know what they were seeing.

The cure isn't willpower. It's a specific skill called the surprise break.

The surprise break is exactly what it sounds like: the shot fires at a moment that genuinely surprises the shooter. The press is slow, deliberate, and continuous — the trigger moves rearward at a steady rate while the shooter maintains sight picture. The shooter does not know exactly when the striker will release. Because the brain never receives a signal to flinch or grab, the finger applies only rearward pressure, the frame stays still, and the bullet goes where the sights were pointing.

This sounds simple. It is not easy. Most people have a deeply wired impulse to anticipate the bang. Overriding that impulse is a learned motor skill, and like any motor skill, it requires repetition.

Before the repetition can happen, the grip has to be right — because a flawed grip transfers work to the trigger finger that the trigger finger shouldn't be doing.

The standard teaching in modern defensive pistol instruction, as outlined in curricula from the NRA Basic Pistol program, USCCA Fundamentals of Concealed Carry, and SIG Sauer Academy guidelines, calls for a high, firm two-handed grip with an intentional tension split between the strong hand and the support hand. The strong hand — your shooting hand — grips primarily through the middle, ring, and pinky fingers wrapped around the grip panel. The thumb rides either straight forward along the frame or stacked with the support-side thumb, depending on the platform. Crucially, the strong hand maintains only moderate grip pressure. It is not the hand doing the heavy squeezing.

The support hand does the heavy work. It wraps the fingers of the non-dominant hand over the strong-hand fingers, fills the gap on the grip panel, and applies the majority of total grip force. Massad Ayoob and USCCA instructors describe this as the support hand squeezing inward and forward simultaneously — a "crush grip" from the support side that locks the frame in place while leaving the trigger finger free to operate independently.

Why does this matter for trigger control? Because if the strong hand is strangling the grip, the trigger finger cannot move in isolation. When the trigger finger presses rearward, it drags the entire strong-hand structure with it. The result is exactly the lateral frame rotation that sends shots off-target. A grip that's correct in its tension distribution lets the trigger finger do one thing — move straight back — without disturbing anything else.

Follow-through completes the equation. It's the step most novices skip entirely, because it seems to happen after the shot, so why would it matter?

It matters because "after the shot" is not as clean a boundary as it sounds. The firing sequence — primer ignition, powder burn, bullet travel down the barrel — takes a measurable slice of time. The shooter's nervous system doesn't know the bullet has left the barrel any faster than it processes any other event. If the shooter relaxes the trigger finger, lets the muzzle dip, or drops the gun to look at the target the instant they perceive the shot, there's a meaningful chance that movement began fractionally before the bullet cleared the muzzle.

Proper follow-through means maintaining everything — sight picture, grip pressure, trigger-finger rearward pressure — through the shot and into the reset. The trigger finger stays rearward until recoil impulse is complete, then rides the trigger forward only until the reset click is felt or heard, and stops there. The next press begins from that reset point, not from a full trigger return to the wall.

This is the four-fundamentals sequence in action: aim, hold, press, and follow-through. The framework comes directly from classical marksmanship instruction — it's the same scaffold used in rifle and carbine training — but its application in a defensive pistol context has one important wrinkle that the marksmanship tradition doesn't always emphasize.

In a defensive context, accuracy means something different than it does on a precision rifle range. You are not printing one-inch groups at fifty yards. You are hitting a vital-zone target — roughly an eight-by-ten-inch area — at distances that are, statistically, most likely between three and fifteen feet. The standard doesn't demand perfection. It demands that you do not miss the target entirely, and that you do not send rounds somewhere they were never intended to go. The fundamentals exist to guarantee that, under stress, with elevated heart rate and adrenaline affecting fine motor control, you still have a reliable process that keeps rounds on target.

Here is where dry fire enters the picture — and where a lot of well-meaning advice gets quietly wrong.

The most common piece of trigger-control training advice passed around is "just dry fire at home." That advice is correct, but it requires a platform-specific safety check first. For centerfire pistols — and the defensive pistols most people own are centerfire — dry fire is explicitly approved by the major manufacturers. Glock, SIG Sauer, Smith & Wesson's M&P line, CZ, and Walther all state in their owner's manuals or official FAQs that dry firing with an empty chamber is safe for their centerfire striker-fired and DA/SA platforms. If you own a rimfire pistol — a .22 LR training pistol, for example — dry fire without a snap cap can damage the firing pin, because the striker impacts the edge of the chamber rather than a primer. Always verify your specific model's manual before dry firing.

The verified-clear protocol is non-negotiable. Remove the magazine. Lock the slide rearward. Visually inspect the chamber — look into it with a light source. Insert a finger if the geometry allows. Close the slide. Point the pistol in a safe direction (into a solid exterior wall or a purpose-built dry-fire backstop) and keep it pointed there for the entire session. Remove all live ammunition from the room. This is not excessive caution. This is the step that separates safe, productive practice from a preventable tragedy.

Once you're clear and set up, a basic home drill runs like this: adopt your two-handed grip in a standing position, present the pistol to a defined aim point on a blank wall, press the trigger through a complete surprise break while calling the shot (predicting where the muzzle was at the moment of the click), and hold everything in place through a full follow-through count of two. Reset the trigger, re-establish sight picture, and press again. Ten to fifteen deliberate repetitions per session, three to four sessions per week, will produce measurable improvement in live-fire accuracy within a few weeks.

Laser training cartridges — devices that fit in the chamber and emit a visible dot at the moment the striker falls — are unregulated consumer products requiring no licensing or permits, and they add useful feedback to dry-fire sessions by showing exactly where the muzzle was pointed at the moment of striker release. SIRT training pistols, LaserLyte inserts, and similar products serve the same function. None of them require anything beyond a purchase decision.

By the end of that first morning, Marcus's instructor had him running a dry-fire drill against the classroom wall using a snap cap while she watched. She didn't point out every imperfection. She pointed out one thing at a time: where his support hand was losing pressure, where his trigger finger was rushing. When they went back to the live-fire range after lunch, his shots were in the center of the silhouette. Not because his sights had changed. Not because the gun had changed. Because his trigger finger had started doing exactly one job — moving straight back — and everything else had stayed still long enough for the bullet to go where it was supposed to go.

That's the whole lesson. The gun will do its part every time. The only question is whether your finger will do its part at the moment that matters.
